Updates

This page is the update mechanism. The application never contacts us — it does not check for new versions, and it could not tell you about one if it wanted to — so this is where a newer release appears.

Why the app cannot tell you itself PrivacyFirst Photo Organizer makes no network request of any kind. That is the product, not an oversight, and it is written into the terms and the AGB. The cost of that promise is this page: bookmark it, or reach it any time from About → What's new online… inside the app.
Installed from the Microsoft Store? Then this page is not your update route. The Microsoft Store installs new versions for you, on its own schedule and with its own version numbers, so the version your copy shows need not match any version listed here — that does not mean it is out of date. Support for the Microsoft Store version explains how its updates work.

Version 1.1.3

If you downloaded your copy from this website and its About window already says 1.1.3, you are up to date and there is nothing to do. If it says 1.1.2, 1.1.1, 1.1.0 or 1.0.0, this is a free update: your licence covers it.

What's changed

  • A more complete open-source notice. The licence notice now points to this site's copy of the source for every GCC runtime the app includes, names one more of them on Linux, and lists the OpenMP library the Mac build uses. Nothing about how the app works has changed.
  • An updated user guide. The guide's Identify People section now describes naming as it actually works: you name each group, then confirm or correct what the app suggests.

Needs 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, Linux with glibc 2.35 or newer, or macOS 26 on either an Apple Silicon or an Intel Mac. A portable Windows build, portable Mac folders for both architectures, a portable Linux tarball and a zipped installer are all on the product page's Downloads section, grouped by operating system, with every checksum.

Which Mac do you have? The two Mac builds are separate and do not substitute for each other. Apple menu → About This Mac: Apple M1 or newer takes the Apple Silicon download, Intel takes the Intel one.

Version 1.1.2

Included in 1.1.3, so updating from 1.1.1, 1.1.0 or 1.0.0 brings all of this as well.

What's fixed

  • Photo actions stop cleanly when a folder stops answering. If the network share or drive holding your originals stops responding part-way through Export, B&W / Retro, Share safely, Enhance, Fix quality, Fix orientation, Rename, captioning, writing tags back or removing data, the action now stops the way Stop does: what was already done is kept, and the status line says which folder stopped answering. Previews refuse with the same message instead of waiting.
  • Selecting a photo on a disconnected folder no longer freezes the inspector. Its details now say the folder is unavailable.
  • A share that drops out is recognised as gone. When a network share times out, or disconnects completely, the app now treats the whole folder as unavailable. It no longer reports each photo as unreadable, or records them as having no date or no place. Run the job again once the share is back and it picks up where it stopped.
  • A corrected open-source notice. The licence notice now also names libquadmath and the GCC runtime libraries, which the app's numerical libraries have always included. Their source is listed on the open-source page.

Version 1.1.1

Included in 1.1.3, so updating from 1.1.0 or 1.0.0 brings all of this as well.

What's fixed

  • A folder that stops answering no longer holds the app up. If a network share or an external drive stops responding part-way through a job, the status line names the folder, and Rescan, Process and the catch-up buttons give up on it, keep everything they finished, and leave the rest waiting rather than marking it unreadable. Press the button again once the folder is back and it carries on. Re-linking and project export say so too, instead of hanging.
  • Thumbnails come back after you reconnect a drive. Tiles that showed a warning while a drive was unplugged now fill in again after a Rescan.
  • Captions on processors without AVX2 explain themselves. On a Windows or Linux computer whose processor lacks AVX2 — budget Celeron and Pentium chips, and PCs from before 2013 — the built-in caption model cannot run. The app used to close when it tried; it now says so in Settings → Models & data and when you press Describe, and captioning through Ollama still works.
  • Naming a group catches the second box. When the detector drew a smaller, second box around a face it had already found, naming the person's group left that box unnamed. It is now named with the rest, and Undo takes it back too.

Version 1.1.0

Included in 1.1.3, so updating from 1.0.0 brings all of this as well.

What's new

  • Black & white and retro copies. Right-click a selection ▸ B&W / Retro…: five black & white mixes, sepia, selenium and cyanotype toning, faded film, a warm ’70s grade and cross-processing, with optional grain, a vignette or an instant-photo frame. You see the photo before and after, and your originals are never touched.
  • Your own tags. Add them in the inspector, from the right-click Tags menu, or for several photos at once in the new tag editor, which can also rename or delete a tag everywhere. The Tags filter finds them, Untagged shows what still needs one, and Write new data saves them into the files as ordinary keywords.
  • A light theme, in Settings → Appearance, beside the dark one.
  • Camera RAW copies keep their date and location. Exported, fixed, straightened and enhanced copies of a RAW file used to lose them, so a fixed copy saved beside the original could land in the wrong event.
  • 16-bit black & white scans are read properly. Version 1.0.0 read them as solid white — see below if you have any.
  • Duplicates keeps the original. A black & white or retro copy saved beside its original is never kept instead of it, even when it scores higher.
  • A warning before copies land in your library. Choose a folder inside your photo folders for exported or styled copies and the app says so, because the next rescan would add them as new photos.

One thing to do after updating

Only if you have scanned black & white negatives or prints (16-bit greyscale files) that 1.0.0 showed as white: select them, right-click Reset to unprocessed…, then run Process New Files. Photos keep what was worked out when they were processed, so the fix reaches them only once they are processed again.

The licence agreement shown inside the app is now version 1.7: its liability section and governing law now say the same as our Terms of use. Your licence file does not change.

Which file is mine?

On a Mac

Two separate builds, and they are not interchangeable. Apple menu → About This Mac: if it says Apple M1 or newer, take the Apple Silicon build above. If it says Intel, take the Intel one.

Installer or portable

Every platform ships in two shapes — an installer and a portable version you can unpack anywhere. The portable one changes nothing about the application; it just does not write to system folders. Windows and Linux have one build each, 64-bit.

Will my licence open it?

Every 1.x release, yes — at no cost and with nothing to re-enter. Install the new version over the old one and your existing licence file keeps working. Nothing expires, and no re-activation is needed, because there is nothing to activate against.

A future 2.0 would be a paid upgrade at a reduced price. If you bought within 60 days before that release, the new licence is sent to you free, without your having to ask.

Lost the licence file? Write to support@itfanatic.com from the address you bought with, and we will send the identical file again. It is stored against your order — re-purchasing is never the answer.

Checking what you downloaded

Every file above is published with a SHA-256 checksum beside it (same name, .sha256 on the end) and a detached GPG signature (.asc). The checksum catches a truncated or corrupted download. The signature is the stronger claim: it is made by a key that never touches the web host, so it still means something if the hosting itself were tampered with.

The public key is at itfanatic.com/release-key.asc — on this site, deliberately not on the download host, so that a key and the artifact it verifies do not share a single point of compromise. The product page carries the fingerprint and the exact commands.

None of this is required. Your operating system will install the application without it; it is here for people who would rather check.
